Third Ground

Building infrastructure for community agency and resilience

Third Ground exists because the gap between understanding the world and being able to act within it keeps widening. Information is everywhere. Meaning, agency and the tools to do something with either are harder to come by.

Third ground is loosely a design studio that builds at that intersection. Our work takes the form of media, physical artefacts and community infrastructure, all made with the same underlying intent: to give people real tools to understand, navigate and reshape the systems we are living inside.

Every piece of work we make has to do at least one of the following: make something hidden or obfuscated visible, give people a way to engage and not just observe, leave something behind that can be returned to and built on.

Third ground is not a media company, it is a studio that makes thing.

How we work

Third Ground does not run fixed programmes. Structure is decided at the level of each piece of work, built around what it actually needs rather than imposed in advance. The through-line across everything is climate resilience, communal agency and creative practice. These pillars are not meant to be treated as stand alone topics, but as practical orientations that shape how work gets designed, who it is made with and what problem is being solved for the common good.

This is early and largley imperfect, We are glad you are here.

What is Field Notes?

Field Notes is the thinking and learning arm of Third Ground. It is where research, writing, visual work and references live, organised around the four areas the studio works across. It is a working record, not a finished archive. Some of it will be polished, though a lot of it won't be.

Climate: The environmental context everything else sits within. Content tagged Climate covers the systems, signals and realities of a changing world, made legible and practical rather than abstract or overwhelming.

Resilience: Our response to that context. Infrastructure projects, community tools, frameworks for agency and anything building real capacity to adapt, collectively and on people's own terms.

Systems: The broader strategies, structures and critiques that shape how the world works. Content here is for understanding power, mapping how things are organised and finding the leverage points worth designing around.

Culture: The wider territory. Art, identity, place, memory and the things that don't fit cleanly elsewhere but matter to how we understand where we are and what is worth building. This is also where creative practice lives as a method for building agency.

What is Supply?

The supply model for Third Ground is still being developed, but the intention is that goods produced will act as a material extension of the studio's practice. This will also allow us to fund future projects that have more upfront costs.
